Neighbor leaves food outside their door after hearing a cat crying, only to find out the cat already belongs to the residents next door: ‘I assumed the cat was a stray’

Whenever we can, we always try to keep our eyes and ears open in case we come across a stray cat in need. Whether it is at a random park or right outside our door, if we hear a cat's cry for help, we will be there to do whatever we can, no matter what.

But what should we do if the cry that we hear belongs to someone else's cat?

It all depends on whether or not we know if the cat belongs to someone else. If we do know, then we might not try to get involved too much. We can try to locate the cat's owner and ensure that they are taking care of their cat, but we wouldn't take it upon ourselves to do it for them. However, if there is no way of knowing if this cat is a stray or not, then you can bet that we are feeding and taking care of that baby until we know otherwise.

Which is why we think the neighbor in the story below is free of blame for doing the same thing with their neighbor's silly cat.

  • Good_Government_1395 Nta. It was an act of kindness. But one word of advise. If you want to create a warm spot for this or a different cat, please use straw instead of a blanket. Blankets or any type of cloth will absorb moisture that will freeze in low temperatures. Straw will retain heat without that risk. Eta: I would stop putting out the food. You don't want to disrupt a feeding schedule or if the cat is on a special diet.

  • elvirablady I would mention that you've put a bed out to your neighbour (you can always say it's for something else) then if they are looking for their cat they know to ask you. If you drop it in a conversation, then great. My cat is a food hog and I have him on a strict diet for various health issues. As an owner I would be glad he's found (yet another bed) and that person knows not to feed him. You're NTA, but tread gently with this.
